John Shemerdiak has sought refuge in a base camp where the mountains meet the waters of the Pacific Northwest since departing the Midwest to study English literature at Western Washington University in the previous century. When not serving others, he takes great pleasure in sliding down rivers, listening to the wind singing through spokes, and swatting disease-carrying mosquitoes.
