Virgil Suárez was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1962. Since 1974 he has lived in the United States. He has authored over twenty books of prose and poetry, most recently Infinite Refuge, with 90 Miles: Selected and New Poems forthcoming from the University of Pittsburg Press. He lives and works in Florida..

His poems "A Memory of Basho in My Mother's Bitter Orange Rind Dessert," "Balsero/Rafter," and "After Cachao's 'A Francisquita le gusta el cusubé'" appear in Square Lake Number Five.
